These topics and more are part of my free online course showing you how to start a blog from scratch. It’s aimed at the absolute beginner.

With today’s piece, I want to share some real ideas for helping you get started writing. Think of these as easy bite-sized bits of inspiration that you can take and run with!

1. Write about your hobbies

Writers start out by writing what they know. Lots of bloggers start out by writing about their hobbies. There are a few reasons why this is the case.

[list-child icon=”fa-check”]You know the questions beginners will ask, and can answer them.[/list-child]

[list-child icon=”fa-check”]You don’t have to spend time researching too much. You know major resources, sites, and tools in the niche.[/list-child]

Examine your hobbies and which might turn into a good subject for your blog.

2. Write about your experiences

With my first blog, I wrote an article about an interview I did with Harvard. I was trying to get into the undergraduate program and you had to go through the in-person interview process.

I couldn’t find any information out there online, so when it was my time to go through the process, I shared my experience.

This blog post got thousands and thousands of views. It’s all because I wrote about an experience that others valued.

You can share stories that resonate with other readers and gather a following.

3. Write about what puzzles you

Curiosity is the mother of invention. When you don’t understand something, likely, there are other people out there that don’t either.

This is how my next blog started, which covers the crowdfunding industry. I didn’t understand how some Kickstarter campaigns were getting wildly funded and others weren’t.

My curiosity is what caused me to research this topic, learn the mechanisms behind a crowdfunding launch, and share it with the world.

Examine what puzzles you. Research the answers. Write about your findings.

4. Write about what others want to know

If you don’t have your own curiosities, questions, or thoughts, then you can answer questions that other people have.

This is the foundation of getting paid to write articles. You’re basically sharing key information with people that want to find it.

To pull this off, you have to put yourself in the mind of a reader. What would they want to know? What questions do they have?

Use this mindset to generate valuable content, and you’ll be sure to get a river of traffic to your website.

5. Write about what makes you angry

Some bloggers thrive off of controversy because they have a strong voice.

They believe that an injustice was committed in the world and they’re on a mission to tell the world about it.

For example, I was always SUPER ANGRY that no one ever told me that blogging could actually be a career.

So many people in my life laughed off the idea that you could become a full-time blogger. That made me angry.

When I succeeded and became a full-time blogger, I was emboldened to share quality information so that others out there can follow in my footsteps.

6. Write about content that makes you feel

Did something happen that will make anyone laugh till they cry?

Did you discover an online video that will make you get the feels?

If you’ve found content online that makes you feel a certain way, chances are, it will have that same impact on someone else.

This is the secret behind many viral blogs that thrive off of social shares. They draw attention to content that gives an emotional reaction.

7. Write about real world events and news

This is a great style of blog, because there are always plenty of content ideas.

News is always happening!

You can provide your commentary, thoughts, and future predictions.

Not only does this give you an outlet for your voice, but it can also help connect you with other commentators who may agree with you.

Blogging is a powerful medium to have a two-way conversation with your readers.

8. Don’t write – interview others!

Just because you start a blog doesn’t mean that you have to do all the writing.

You can also interview other people who may have more to say.

You could do a text-based interview or compose a complete story in the form of a featured article.

Interviews can be a great way to provide different perspectives on an issue. They can also clue you into the niche you’re writing in and be a good research exercise.

So, what should you write about?

As you can see, there are a lot of topics you can explore.
