Last year, I worked my tail off in the pursuit of a financial dream. I ended up having a lot of success in my business life. But, as much as I am pleased with how my career is going, a lot of things have fallen by the wayside, like my personal life and certain bucket list items that have nothing to do with my career goals, but have everything to do with who I want to be as a person.
When I was younger, it always mystified me that the most intelligent people in school were not the most “fit” or muscularly adept people in school. Building muscle or losing fat is a scientific certainty given a particular workout and diet routine. Shouldn’t the smartest people that I know succeed not only academically, but also in terms of being the wealthiest and healthiest people in our society? Shouldn’t they also be the happiest?
Looking back, that thought process seems silly – not everyone wants the same things – but it also touches on an aspect of our society that not many people talk about: What is success?
It’s no secret that some of the athletes, movie stars, business men, and singers we revere are successful in one arena, but not in others. They may have boatloads of fans and no real friends, or a ton of cash, but be in an unhappy marriage.
Even people I admire like Arnold Schwarzenegger were successful in multiple areas like body building, business, movies, and politics, but he completely failed in his marriage to a great woman. Is that success?
As bestselling author Tony Robbins says, “Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure.” There’s nothing worse than climbing the mountain of success, only to find out that it’s pretty lonely at the top and that it’s not as cool as you thought when you actually get there.
Being a very single-minded person who pretty much ignores anything that doesn’t contribute the vision of my success, that sentiment above scares me and has made me want to work to develop other areas of my life, aside from just focusing on building a successful business.
I’m starting a new pet project centered around the field of “motivation” “self-mastery” and “life management.” It’s going to take the form of blog posts, possibly a podcast, and might find it’s way on to youtube (Yes – I’ve been neglecting my youtube account and need to form a clearer vision for the kind of show I want to put on).
To start this off, I’ve purchased the book, “Giant Steps: Small Changes to Make a Big Difference” by Tony Robbins, which basically contains 365 daily lessons from his larger books, Unlimited Power and Awaken the Giant Within. Each lesson is meant to spur thoughts and also get you to shape and take action on the kind of life you want to lead.
Feel free to join me if you’d like on this journey! I think that part of life is about self-discovery, but I think the other part is about learning as much as you can from other people. I love learning about the new projects and dreams of entrepreneurs on my existing podcast. Personal dreams are no different! Share yours below!
