Niche Site Experiment

A while back, I wrote an article on how to choose a niche for your blog and some tools or metrics that you can can use to gauge the size of the market you plan to enter.

At the time, I was considering launching a blog about the intersection of internet marketing and tech startups, what is now thought of as “growth hacking.” However, I lost interest in the idea as a blogging topic.

Recently, I’ve become passionate about another topic, podcasting. I was starting to think to myself as to why I am passionate about this topic, and not the other one. The reason is simple: I have launched a podcast and I’m learning a lot along the way. In contrast, I’m not doing a tech startup at the moment, which was the crux of the other topic.

My takeaway from this is that whenever you want to learn about a topic (as I did with crowdfunding) or are actively learning about one, then it’s a great opportunity to share the knowledge you accumulate with the world in the form of a blog!

This newfound podcasting passion has lead me to create a niche blog, where I’m sharing what I learn from growing the CrowdCrux Crowdfunding Podcast. So far, I’ve grown it to 1,000 downloads in a few weeks, which I’ve documented here.

Below, I’ve outlined three key pillars that I think are going to be essential to this website. Feel free to leave any questions via comment.

1. I’ve taken consistency out of the equation.

One of my new years resolutions was to be more consistent, both in business and in life. For most new bloggers, the hardest part about building a successful blog is to keep at it!

I’ve taken this weakness out of the equation by pre-scheduling most of the content that’s going out on the blog each week (one post per week) and making a list of all the article topics/headlines for the rest of the posts this year.

Now, I don’t have to rush to write a new post each week, as I’m a few weeks ahead, and I don’t have to struggle to come up with an article topic for a particular post.

2. I am not using advertising.

I’ve always used the google adsense program as a supplemental income stream with other websites I’ve done. With this website, I’m going to focus 100% on affiliate marketing and my own digital products.

In order for that kind of a revenue model to work, I’m going to need to develop a high level of trust with my readers and provide tremendous value to them! I’m excited for the challenge.

Given the limited time that I have to spend on this website, I think it’s going to mean that I must make each article and hour devoted to the website count! There is no room for non-essentials like checking stats constantly or looking at cool plugins or themes.

3. I am not focusing on money or revenue.

This might seem contradictory to point #2, but my goal with this website is not to make a lot of money. I’m doing it to share what I’m learning as I grow my podcast and hopefully help out others.

I think that revenue is a by-product of helping people in some way. My first and foremost concern when launching a new website is doing the latter, rather than worrying about the former.

Conclusion

So that’s the new side project! It will be interesting to see how or if it grows over time!
